Giant Sundial In Hurley, WI

This sundial is located in Iron County, WI near the shores of Lake Superior just miles from the Upper Peninsula of MI. This area was the heart of mining in WI at the turn of the century. The hour numbers are marked by pieces of granite which were removed from a mine as the drill bored into the earth. Read more here

Back in 1957, the designer of this analemmatic sundial could never imagine that outside of a pesky gnomon, he was designing a nice half pipe for skateboarding. In the 21st century, the creativity of the scientist/artist meets the repurposing vision of the modern skateboarder. Sundial at Royal Arsenal

While on vacation in the UK, friends of GardenSundials.com sent us photos of a beautiful sundial at the old Royal Arsenal which was a center of British ordnance production. The dial in this picture is now an entry to a pub called the Dial Arch.
