Handcarved Wood Sundial Pedestal / Plinth - architectural salvage from India (NG622_3)
Beautiful vintage hand carved wood plinth once served as the base of a column in an Indian home. Will make a wonderful base for a sundial. The wood block features ornamental elements that were beautifully hand chiseled by a craftsmen. The original coloration mixed with the desert sun weathered wood has faded into a beautiful patina. The age is at least 50 years old.
Since this mounting a sundial is repurposing the base, the sundial will simply rest on the base and not attach like our other stands. If you have a Rome sundial with a bracket in the center of the dial, the hole in the center of the base will be about and 1/8 - 1/4" too small to let the bracket sit inside. If you want the bracket to fit inside the hole, you will need to cut the opening a little bit wider.
We found this ornamental wood plinth on a trip to the Indian desert state of Rajasthan where I work with people who specialize in recovering visually and historically interesting elements from homes and buildings that are torn down.
This is a one of a kind piece and has some beautiful detailing. You'll see on one of the pictures that I show all 4 sides, so you can get a better idea as to the detailing and condition of the wood.
